Martin's Tech Guide on How to Clean Dissection Equipment

Dissection equipment should be cleaned thoroughly and quickly after use to prevent the spread of disease and to maintain the integrity of the equipment.

Here are some steps you can follow to clean dissection equipment:

  1. Rinse off any visible debris from the equipment with tap water.
  2. Use a mild detergent and warm water to scrub the equipment, paying particular attention to any crevices or hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Rinse the equipment thoroughly with tap water to remove any soap residue.
  4. Disinfect the equipment by soaking it in a solution of 1 part Milton’s solution to 10 parts water for at least 10 minutes.
  5. Rinse the equipment again with tap water to remove any sterilising residue.
  6. Allow the equipment to air dry or pat it dry with a clean tea towel before storing it.
  7. Add a thin layer of Vaseline, carefully, to scalpel blades if not changing each time.

It is important to use caution when handling and cleaning dissection equipment, as some materials may be sharp or hazardous. Wear protective gloves and follow all safety guidelines when handling and cleaning dissection equipment.
